Descant listens while you sing so it can tell you how the phrase went. This page says what that means: what is recorded, what never is, and how to take it all back. Descant is run by Joel Stephano, a sole trader based in the United Arab Emirates, who decides how this data is used. Last updated 14 October 2026.
Your voice stays on your device
The microphone is open only while you are singing a phrase. What it hears is analysed on your own phone or laptop — the pitch, the timing, the vowel — and the audio is never uploaded. Descant has no recording of you and no way to make one.
What is sent, when a pass ends, is the measurement: a line of pitch over time, when each note began, how each one scored. It is the shape of the singing, not the sound of it.
What Descant keeps
- Your accountYour name and email address, so your choir knows who you are. Sign-in is handled by Clerk.
- Your choirWhich choir you belong to, the part you sing, and whether you direct.
- Your practiceEvery pass you sing: the measurements above, the verdict, and what it moved — the phrases you have mastered and when they are due again.
- Your settingsHow much you practise each day, how strictly a pass is scored, your accent, and your time zone (so your day rolls over at your midnight).
- Your device, as far as the audio needsThe microphone your browser reports, its sample rate, and how far behind it runs — the numbers the timing depends on.
- Which pages were openedPage views, counted by Vercel Analytics. No profile, no advertising, no tracking across other apps or sites.
- Asking to join a choir by its linkThe email address and the part you picked, kept with that choir so you start on that part when you join. The choir’s directors see the invitation, like any other they send.
- A demo link sent to youIf a director sent you a link to try a song, the name they wrote for you, and how far you got: when you opened it, how many phrases you sang, whether you tried the cards or booked a call. Only that director sees it. Nothing you sing on a demo is kept.
Who else sees it
- Your director and your choirA director sees their choir’s readiness and roster — who sings what, and which passages the section is behind on. Other singers see the choir’s progress, not your takes — and your milestones, if you share them.
- ClerkHolds your sign-in: name, email and session. It also sends the email that invites you to a choir.
- SupabaseHolds the database and the choir’s audio files, in Europe.
- VercelRuns the app and counts page views.
- AnthropicWhen a pass earns written coaching, the measurements of that pass and the phrase’s notes are sent to Anthropic’s API to write it. Your name and email are not.
- PaddleIf your choir pays for Descant, Paddle sells it to the choir, takes the payment, handles the tax and sends the invoice. Descant never sees card details.
- SentryWhen the app hits an error: what went wrong and on which page, the build, the browser and the kind of device, kept in Europe. Never your voice, your name or your email.
Descant does not sell anything to anybody, and there is no advertising in it.
Taking it back
Settings → Delete my account. Your account, every take you have sung, every phrase you have mastered and everything scheduled for you are deleted together, and cannot be brought back. Your choir keeps its music.
If you would rather ask, or want a copy of what is held first, write to hello@descant.app.
Cookies
One, for signing in. Descant sets no advertising or analytics cookies. Your device also keeps a copy of the music you practise, so it works without a connection; that lives in your browser and clearing it removes it.
